Every Wednesday, the ugly hug shares a playlist personally curated by an artist/band that we have been enjoying. This week we have a collection of songs put together by the Chicago-based band, Lund Surk.
Listen here, comrades! The revolution is here and it’s homegrown. There is no middle on the other side. The American century of humiliation is here. Back in May, Lund Surk shared Loyal Party Member, a brief yet mighty collection of fool proof pop hooks, rogue guitar solos and tender harmonies that stand for a band at their best. Built up by the contributions of Ruben Steiner (guitar, vocals), Desi Lilly (drums, keys), Charlie Johnston (guitar), Vi Matheos (bass), and Kaylyn Dix (drums), Lund Surk is a band built by and for defiance. Emphasizing the foundational warp of American exceptionalism, the capitalistic smash-and-grabs of the working class, privatized incarceration and the “us vs them” sentiments that have destroyed our world, Lund Surk make clear that there is still so much to fight for. Loyal Party Member is a reminder that every action we take in our day to day lives is inherently political. It’s our willingness to organize, to stand together, to be empathetic, to be joyful, our ability to create and share art that can reshape power. Lund Surk are ready. But they ask, “Could you be it? Could you be the tide of change?”
About the playlist, Lund Surk shared;
Loyal Party Member owes a lot to its influences! This playlist is a compiling of various works which the five of us drew from whilst making the record, or the things the material otherwise reminds us of. Hope you like it!
